PORT ALLEN- A family has filed suit against the sheriff's office in West Baton Rouge after a family member died in custody.
In court documents, the family of Ervin Edwards claim his death was unwarranted. Edwards died after being tazed following a disturbance last week.
But, Sheriff Mike Cazes said his deputies responded correctly when Edwards tried to fight them while removing his handcuffs. He said four or five deputies attempted to control Edwards before he was tazed.
Cazes said the evidence can prove it.
"I welcome anybody to come in" and look, Cazes told WBRZ News 2.
"I have nothing to hide."
Because the parish coroner is also the prison doctor, Cazes asked for an independent coroner to perform the autopsy and he's still waiting for results from that, including toxicology results.
