AMITE - Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards said his old jail building may be to blame for allowing a prisoner to escape. But the prisoner also had some help and now he's back behind bars.

Verdale Moore escaped Sunday night from the Tangipahoa jail by using a piece of metal from his bunk bed to bust through a wall. He was recaptured Monday in Osyka, Miss. Sheriff Edwards used the situation to renew calls for a new prison.

"We educated the voters last fall," Edwards said. "Tangipahoa government called for tax to build new jail. Certainly nothing changed for the better. We need newer facilities."

Other inmates made loud noises to cover for him while he broke through the wall. Edwards said the building has now been reinforced with metal to guard against future escape attempt.

"We're thankful to parish government for helping respond and shore up these areas," Edwards said. "We do want to call for assessments to make sure there are no areas we're not aware of where you could have the same type of deficiencies."

Moore is awaiting extradition from Mississippi.
