LAPLACE - Law enforcement agencies rallied around the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office today after four deputies were shot in the line of duty, and two of them killed.

Sheriff Mike Tregre briefed the media this afternoon about the deadly shooting, flanked by State Police Col. Mike Edmonson and other members of local sheriff's and police departments.

Brandon Nielsen, 34, and Jeremy Triche, 27, died in the shooting at a LaPlace trailer park. Another deputy, Jason Triche, was wounded in the shootout, which occurred while officers were investigating the shooting of another deputy, Michael Boyington, which happened earlier that morning.

"I want to say thank you to all... who called and offered their condolences," Triegre said. "This is not a good day, but we are going to get through this one way or another."

Triegre said Boyington was shot while working an off-duty traffic detail around 5:30 a.m. Deputies followed up on tips the shooter's vehicle was seen at a nearby trailer park, but after they arrived Triegre said they were "ambushed" by a person with an AK-47, who killed Nielsen and Jeremy Triche and wounded Jason Triche. He said this afternoon multiple weapons were used in the shootings, and State Police said it would take some time for them to fully process evidence from all the crime scenes.

He said all the suspects involved in the shooting were in custody and being questioned by investigators. Two were wounded in the firefight at the trailer park.

State Police have taken over the investigation, while other agencies have offered deputies to help out the department in the wake of the shooting.

News 2 will have live, team coverage of the shootings tonight starting at 4 p.m.
