BATON ROUGE - Work crews were in 15 Baton Rouge homes on Friday as the state Shelter at Home programs moves to full swing.

One of those homes was already complete by the time the day was out. Louisiana's Shelter at Home program pays up to $15,000 to make homes safe so occupants can remain in their homes while more extensive repairs and improvements are made.

Very basic initial work will include items such as mucking out the house, basic electrical restoration, installing a basic water heater, removing wet wall insulation, and providing up to $500 in basic cooking or refrigerating appliances, according to the program's website. The work will be provided at no out-of-pocket cost to the eligible homeowner so that they can remain in their own home while rebuilding.

Over 14,000 households have already applied for assistance through the program since Monday. The Governor's Office says that while it isn't the program's goal to completely restore your home, it's a good start to getting back there.

Shelter at Home is a state program, meaning the aid provided is separate from that provided by FEMA. You can apply online at shelterathome.la.gov.
