Shell evacuates 70 in SW Gulf
NEW ORLEANS - With a tropical storm approaching, Royal Dutch Shell says it has evacuated about 70 non-essential personnel from production and drilling operations in the extreme southwest Gulf of Mexico.
The company says there has been no interruption of production - and none is currently expected.
Forecasters say Tropical Storm Don - with a maximum sustained wind speed of 40 mph - likely will track west over the next couple of days toward the Texas coast.
Another Gulf of Mexico petroleum operator - ExxonMobil Corp. - said it is monitoring the storm.
The federal Bureau of Ocean Management, Regulation and Enforcement, which tracks oil and natural gas production interruptions during storms, said it had no word of any shutdowns Wednesday.
