Shelby Holmes: A tragic end and a new beginning
BATON ROUGE- A murder victim's spirit survives after death because of an organ donation.
Shelby Homes, 38, was shot and killed in October while he was walking home in Old South Baton Rouge. His killer remains a mystery.
But, from this tragedy came hope for Holmes' friend Doug Cossman. Cossman would receive Holmes' kidney after spending years on dialysis waiting for a transplant.
"When we found out that I was a match and that I was going to get his kidney I was extremely proud that it was going to come from Shelby and that we were going to continue to keep him alive and we were going to continue to keep him with us wherever we went," he explained.
The transplant was a success.
Cossman remembers his friend as giving him a reason to smile, even when his health was failing. Now he says he'll try to bring Shelby's smile with him everywhere he goes.
