Emergency officials say severe storms Saturday heavily damaged a church in east central Mississippi and caused minor damage to a school in the northern part of the state.

Greg Flynn, spokesman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, says meteorologists had not confirmed whether a tornado struck in Lauderdale County. That's where a church was damaged by strong winds.

He says minor damage occurred at Olive Branch Middle School in DeSoto County, just south of Memphis, Tenn.

Most of Mississippi was under tornado watches and warnings Saturday as severe weather swept through the South. Several sporting events and festivals were rescheduled because of the
storms.
