Seven people were arrested on hate crime charges in Livingston Parish after deputies say they beat up two men during a bizarre scam.
Deputies say the victims were lured to a house on Sonya Drive near Albany, expecting to have sex with a woman in exchange for money. But when they arrived, the men were ambushed.
Investigators say several other men pistol-whipped the victims and tried to pull out their teeth with pliers. The victims were then told to have illegal drugs delivered to the house.
When police responded to the scene, investigators say they could hear racial threats being made against the victims. Officers forced their way into the house and rescued the men, who were treated for their injuries.
The seven people arrested are:
Calvin Arnone, 22, from Oskya, MS
Lance Cheramie, 25, from Cutoff
Marie Cheramie, 23, from Hammond
Carla Hughes, 41, from Albany
Crystal Hughes, 21, from Osyka, MS
Johnny Hughes, 43, from Albany
Joshua Kiger, 25, from Hammond
All seven are charged with hate crimes, false imprisonment and aggravated battery. The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected.
