BATON ROUGE- Louisiana could have its own, less stringent plan for implementing the Environmental Protection Agency's limits on carbon dioxide emissions, under a proposal advancing in the Legislature.

The Senate Environmental Quality Committee has approved a proposal by its chairman, Sen. Mike Walsworth, to let the state Department of Environmental Quality decide how to apply EPA's upcoming rule on carbon dioxide emissions.

The EPA plans to release new regulations in June to curb carbon dioxide emissions from power plants, an effort to fight climate change.

Walsworth said his bill would dictate how Louisiana gets to the result the EPA wants. The measure was supported by the coal industry.

Opponents said the proposal would cause confusion and could hurt efforts to fight carbon dioxide pollution.

The proposal moves next to the Senate floor.
