NEW ROADS - Senator Mary Landrieu called officials at the Environmental Protection Agency "unelected bureaucrats" and urged her cohorts in Congress to block the agency's plan to reduce carbon emissions.

"[The] EPA doesn't have the authority, and I think Congress should take the responsibility, to set energy policy," Senator Landrieu said.

Monday, she toured the Big Cajun II coal plant in New Roads and slammed the EPA's plan to reduce power plants' carbon emission.  The EPA blames the emissions on climate change and wants plants to cut back 30 percent by 2030 from the 2005 standards.

The Association of Louisiana Electric Co-ops says the new standards would increase electric bills 75 to 80 percent.  Landreiu agrees with those numbers.

The possible EPA regulation still has a long way to go. President Obama or Congress could step in to revise the mandates before its set to be enforced by June 2015.

The EPA is taking public comment on this issue right now.
