Seimone Augustus becomes first La. native with three Olympic gold medals

RIO DE JANIERO – Former LSU Tigers Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles earned their third straight Olympic gold medals Saturday after the USA women’s basketball team defeated Spain 101-72.

Saturday’s win marks the sixth straight Olympic gold medal win for the Team USA women’s basketball team.

According to LSU athletics, Augustus is the first Louisianan to win three Olympic gold medals. In the final game, Augustus played 17 minutes, scoring six points, three rebounds and two assists.

Augustus and Fowles will return to their Minnesota Lynx team as the WNBA season resumes on Aug. 26.

The Lynx clinched a playoff berth before the Olympic break and are second in the standings at 21-4, one-half game behind the Los Angeles Sparks at 21-3. The playoffs begin for the WNBA on Sept. 21.
