GULFPORT, Miss. - The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has issued a precautionary beach closure for a section of beach in Gulfport.
The closure announced Wednesday stretches from Teagarden Road on the west to the old Veterans Administration property on the east.
The department said the precautionary closure was issued because sewage was discharged from the City of Gulfport collection system. The city reported discovery of a spill which entered a storm drain leading to the beach.
The cause of the spill was fixed. However, sewage may have reached the Mississippi Sound. The department said people should not eat seafood from nearshore waters along the affected area until further notice.
