Secret Service contacted about stolen debit, credit card numbers
BATON ROUGE- The sheriff's office has discussed a wide-spread issue with credit and debit card numbers being stolen with the Secret Service.
The agency said it does not believe there was a breach, but possibly a series of people taking pictures or copying card numbers resulting in the reports of card number thefts. Investigators said a number of people have reported issues and have had money used in places they were not visiting like Texas, New York and as far away as France.
"Personally, I'll probably just keep cash on me," victim A.D. Guzman said. Guzman was alerted by his bank that his debit card had been used out-of-town. He lost $200 and worked with his bank to get the money back. He said he knows of others who have had similar problems.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office asks people to report fraudulent spending. Financial experts suggest keeping a close eye on accounts.
