Search underway for child predator in Clinton
CLINTON - Authorities are searching for a convicted child predator who skipped out on a sentencing hearing in East Feliciana Parish last week.
Prentiss Corey Chavers, 35, was supposed to go to jail last week after he pleaded guilty to charges related to having sex with a young boy. The victim's father said the child was 14 when the sex began.
"It's sickening," said the dad, whose name is not being reported to protect the identity of his child. "It really is sickening."
The father said the abuse was discovered after nasty text messages were found on his son's phone.
"He's a predator," the dad said. "He's already preyed on my child. I don't know if he's out there preying on another child."
Text messages obtained by the Investigative Unit show Chavers was also into more than just sex.
"Did you take both morphine pills," Chavers asked the victim in one. "You didn't want me to stop," another text read. "You said it yourself."
A plea agreement reached between prosecutors and Chavers outlines the deal he was supposed to get: a ten-year sentence with all but two years suspended. Since Chavers didn't show up in court, though, that plea agreement will likely be invalid.
Chavers' attorney, Jake Lemmon, told WBRZ he didn't know why his client skipped out of court. He also said he wasn't sure where his client was located.
"I'm concerned because my child has to be out here," the victim's father said. "I don't feel my child is safe."
As the victim's father waits for justice to run its course, he has his own idea of what justice should be for his child's abuser.
"It was medieval." he said. "I never thought like that before. I never thought the medieval things I could do to a person if I got my hands on them."
Call the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office if you've spotted Chavers.
