BATON ROUGE – Authorities say a Scotlandville High School senior was arrested Monday after a gun was found in his backpack.

According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, 17-year-old Major Payton was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Monday for illegal carrying of a weapon on school property and violation of a weapon free zone.

Deputies say school officials received an anonymous tip that Payton had the gun on school property. Officials made contact with Payton and found an unloaded .22 caliber revolver in his backpack.

EBRSO said Payton told administrators that he moved over the weekend and forgot that he placed the gun in his bag until he opened it at school and it fell on his desk.

Investigators say students with information about the incident or other similar incidents are encouraged to contact their school officials or EBRSO at 225-389-5000.

Students can also text “CS225” and their message to CRIMES (274637).
