The oil spill in the Gulf drew a lot of anti-BP feelings. One man defends the company with a homemade sign. He put it in his front yard in Schriever near Thibodaux.
He said his defense of BP isn't personal but necessary because no one else is doing it.
"I had to," said Sam Tabor. "I say it's a tragedy, but I gotta stand by BP."
Tabor spent 50 years in the oil and gas industry. He said before the spill, companies like BP took care of him and this community. Since the Deepwater Horizon explosion and spill that followed, he said he feels the community has forgotten that. The sign that reads, "God Bless BP" is Tabor's way of reminding them.
"What I was hearing about BP was all negative news, and BP is a good company," said Tabor.
Tabor acknowledges what has happened under BP's watch is not good, but he said it is something that just happened.
"I'm not blaming BP at all for what happened, Transocean either," said Tabor. "Those people didn't want to lose those lives. That's an asset to them, and that rig is an asset to them. They didn't want to lose all that, and that's my opinion."
As to others' opinions, Tabor said the response to his message is what he hoped for.
"'Oh, wow,'" said Tabor. "I haven't heard anything negative about the sign. It's always, it's good."
He said he now hopes more will see it that way, too.
"I ask the Almighty God to bless 'em," said Tabor. "They need all the help they can get."
