PLAQUEMINE- The public school system in Iberville Parish is adding more school resource officers to its staff, a direct result of the school shooting in Connecticut at the end of 2012.

The Iberville Parish School System is covering most of the cost. The district plans to hire three school resource officers. It will cost about $155,000.

Leaders said the cost is minor, compared to what officers add to campuses.

"Discipline problems can go down. Ours have decreased 30 percent this year," said Chandler Smith, principal at Plaquemine High.

Plaquemine High got its resource officer six months ago.

The district wants to add three more officers to work at the elementary, middle, and perhaps more at the high school.

"If a shooter comes in the school we are not going to stand down and wait for the swat team. This person is going to step forward and he's going to confront the person on the spot," said Iberville Parish's Sheriff Brett Stassi.

Stassi also has a part in the resource program.

Funding for the program is covered, for the most part, from an increase in tax dollars. The money could have been spent on any school program.
