BATON ROUGE - A new policy endorsed by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System Central Office grants students at certain schools the right to re-do assignments and re-take tests regardless of their grade.

Belaire and Tara High Schools were the first to roll out the new policy defining "student's rights." It gives students the right to request a make-up, request a re-do on any assignment to better understand the information, re-take tests regardless of the initial score, to replace grades if they did not understand the material at the time of the assignment, and the right to receive a grade that reflects "what I know."

On Wednesday, teachers and principals from across the district were trained in the new policy.

"We know that kids sometimes need multiple times to get things right," Ramona Remble, a Belaire High School Biology teacher said.

"In the real world if you failed the bar exam, you can re-take it. If you fail your teachers' certification exam, you can re-take it," EBR Associate Superintendent Orlando Ramos said.

Some students questioned if this new policy is fair for those already applying themselves and making good grades.

"If you don't do it the first time and you have no intentions of doing it, why get a second chance," asked Ekeidra Lanehart, a Belaire senior.

Other schools in East Baton Rouge Parish plan to roll out similar policies.
