BATON ROUGE - A bill to create a breakaway school district is headed for another round with lawmakers after the state House added an amedment today.
The House passed the amended version of the bill which would create a breakaway school district in southeast Baton Rouge, between the I-10 and I-12 split.
The Senate will then have to take up the amended bill and vote on it again before it can go to the governor's desk for a signature. The House also still has to take up another measure that would put a constitutional amedment on the ballot, asking voters to either approve or vote against creating the new district.
The proposed district contains ten schools currently in the East Baton Rouge Parish Schools system. Opponents say there's not enough information being made available about the possible effects of the move, and that removing the district could financially cripple the EBR Schools system. Supporters said those concerns have been addressed.
