Scholarship loss not a federal case
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.- A former female basketball player who lost her scholarship at Central Michigan University also lost her bid to get it back in a federal appeals court. Brooke Heike lost her scholarship after her sophomore season in 2008. That was under coach Sue Guevara. CMU says it withdrew the scholarship because of Heike's attitude and unwillingness to work hard. Heike claims it was because she was heterosexual. She sued but a lower court judge dismissed the lawsuit. Heike appealed to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals which says she got a fair hearing during the campus appeals process and the court said disappointment with a coach's decision doesn't mean there's a remedy in federal court.
