A new scam hitting Baton Rouge can make victims think it's legit.
The scam has been reported across half the country. It uses personal information, including addresses and social security numbers, from old online payday loans to hook victims into thinking they still owe money. Scammers then threaten the victims by phone for immediate payment.
The Better Business Bureau says that information seems to have been stolen and possibly sold. The BBB says what's worse is that they can also use it for identity theft.
If you find yourself caught up in a case like this, the BBB says to quiz the caller about the details of the alleged debt. If you still think it's a scam, report it to the Better Business Bureau and to the three credit bureaus.
