A check worth almost $4,000 is being sent to residents in Livingston Parish. A letter is also attached stating that they've won thousands more.
That same letter instructs them to use the enclosed check to cover taxes. That amount could be upwards of $3,000.
The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office says people become victims once they cash that check. Investigators say you're giving your money away to strangers, and you'll end up owing the bank the money you send out.
Investigators say all the letters have been postmarked from Canada, which means they're almost impossible to track.
This scam circulates year round, but experts say many could fall for it because of tough economic times and with the holidays right around the corner.
If you receive a suspicious check, you should call your local authorities or a local branch of the Better Business Bureau.
