SC officer to be charged with murder after video of shooting surfaces
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Officials in Charleston, S.C. announced that a police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man over the weekend will be charged with murder after video of the shooting surfaced.
According to ABC News the video showed North Charleston officer Michael Slager shooting 50-year-old Walter 'Lamar' Scott as Scott was running away from the officer. A bystander shot the video, and the attorney for the victim's family provided it to ABC News.
The police department placed Slager on administrative leave after the shooting Saturday. Officials said Slager originally called in a traffic stop, and then said he was in a foot pursuit with the driver. Slager then reported "shots fired" and said "he took my taser," according to the police department.
In the video, Scott is seen near Slager when he turns and runs away, wires possibly from the stun gun falling to the ground. Slager pulls his gun and fires eight times as Scott runs away, and Scott falls to his knees. Officials said he hit Scott four times, and two of the shots were fatal.
"I can tell you that as a result of that video and the bad decision made by our officer he will be charged with murder and that's not something that we like to hear," Mayor R. Keith Summey said at a press conference Tuesday evening.
In a statement released to ABC News affiliate WCIV in Charleston Sunday, Slager's attorney David Aylor said his client believed he followed "all the proper procedures and policies of the North Charleston Police Department."
On Tuesday, Aylor told ABC News he was no longer representing Slager.
