BATON ROUGE - Louisiana Ballooning Foundation announced Saturday night's festivities of the Pennington Balloon Championships sponsored by WBRZ has been cancelled due to weather.
George Richard, Executive Director of LBF said they can't take the risk again.
"We had severe lightning with a sudden storm that blew in Friday afternoon with hundreds of parents and children on the field."
Richard said this means Pennington Field is closed and all scheduled events are cancelled. That includes all bands, the Children's Village, Flying Dragons Skydiving Team, the Mass Ascension of 20 balloons, the Balloon Glow, and the fireworks.
The National Weather Service predicts a repeat of electrical storms Saturday afternoon.
People huddling under a tent were rocked in the Friday storm by lightning striking a nearby tree.
"That's never happened before in 20 years at Baton Rouge balloon events," said Richard.
Championship competition remains scheduled for daybreak Sunday for $35,000 cash.
All hot-air balloon enthusiasts, photographers and families are encouraged to come to the field by 7 a.m. for the last day's competition.
