The late astronaut, Sally Ride, who died this week protected her privacy and came out as being gay only in her obituary. The obituary she co-wrote before her death mentions her same-sex partner of 27 years. Her circle of family and friends have known for years she was gay but for many millions of others who admired her as the first American woman in space, it comes as a surprise. Some pundits have second-guessed her decision to opt for privacy. They contend she would have been a role model for gay youth while she was alive.
