Saints part ways with past defensive stars
The New Orleans Saints announced via twitter that they have parted ways with four veteran defensive players in an effort to clear up rosters spots and salary cap space.
Safety Jabari Greer, safety Roman Harper, defensive end Will Smith and linebacker Jonathan Vilma were either released or had their contracts not renewed freeing them from the team.
Three of the four players released today, Smith, Vilma and Harper were former Pro Bowl players during their time with the Saints and all four were members of the Saints Super Bowl winning team in 2009.
General Manager Mickey Loomis commented on the moves, "These were not easy decisions to make. Since we acquired them, Jabari, Roman, Will and Jonathan have all been excellent players on the field for us. Each of them were integral parts in turning this program around and winning a Super Bowl. They were a great example to our players as team leaders in the locker room as well."
