Saints leaders aim to keep morale, focus high
METAIRIE - Saints coach Sean Payton says the uphill climb his team faces is the kind of scenario he had in mind when he and his staff placed an emphasis on the character of the players they acquired.
Payton says mental toughness isn't tested so much when teams are winning as when they have to respond to adversity.
Team captains including quarterback Drew Brees and right tackle Zach Strief say they're trying to set a tone which promotes enthusiasm and intensity.
Brees says he wants teammates to be mindful that pro football is still supposed to be fun and that players should embrace the "thrill of competition."
Strief says it's also leadership's responsibility to ensure players with less experience don't start questioning how the Saints operate.
