Saints cut 4th-round draft pick Khairi Fortt
METAIRIE - The New Orleans Saints have released rookie linebacker Khairi Fortt, a fourth-round draft choice who had been placed on short-term injured reserve and designated for return.
The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Fortt, drafted out of California, missed much of training camp with an unspecified leg injury before the Saints made the decision at the end of the preseason to place him on short-term injured reserve.
The designation would have allowed Fortt to return to practice after the Saints return from their bye in Week 7 and play in Week 9.
The transaction was made official by NFL headquarters on Monday afternoon. Earlier in the day, Saints coach Sean Payton declined to answer a question about Fortt's prospects for returning to practice following Week 6.
