PORTSMOUTH, Va. - He was reported missing at sea two months ago. But Louis Jordan, who was rescued yesterday from the overturned hull of his sailboat off the North Carolina coast, was in surprisingly good condition when he left a hospital hours later -- with no signs of sunburn, dehydration or other ailments. Despite reports of a shoulder injury, he refused treatment.

The crew of a German-flagged container ship found Jordan on the hull of his boat yesterday. Neither he nor the Coast Guard is saying exactly when his vessel capsized. The Coast Guard says he managed to catch and eat fish during his ordeal.

Members of the four-man Coast Guard helicopter crew that hoisted him off the German vessel yesterday say they didn't see his boat, and didn't know any details about his time at sea.

One of the crew members said Jordan was in "fairly good condition for a guy that you would normally expect to see after 60-plus days offshore."

Jordan, who is 37, says he got by by rationing his water and energy and praying for help.

His mother says Jordan had been living on his boat at a marina in South Carolina until January, when he told his family he was going into open water to sail and fish. He hadn't been heard from since.
