GONZALES - Sheriff Jeff Wiley confirmed to News 2 that investigators located a safe today that matched the description of one stolen during a deadly home invasion in Ascension Parish this weekend.
Wiley said the safe was found in a "remote area" of Livingston Parish. It was similar to the safe stolen from the home of Robert and Shirley Marchand Saturday night, when the couple and their stepson Douglas Dooley were attacked. Robert Marchand and Dooley were killed, while Shirley Marchand survived.
Wiley said the safe had a hole cut in the bottom of it, possibly by a torch, and was completely empty when it was found. The safe contained a coin collection estimated to be worth more than $100,000.
Wiley said the safe will be analyzed to confirm it's connected to the double homicide, and see if any other clues can be gleaned from it.
We'll have more on this developing story at 6 and 10 p.m.
