BATON ROUGE - Summer vacation for most students ends in a matter of days, but the fight over Common Core won't end anytime soon.

Chas Roemer is president of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and said Common Core has turned into a fiasco caused by Governor Bobby Jindal.

"We're going to keep Common Core in the state because it's the law," said Roemer at the Baton Rouge Press Club Monday. "Going to keep Common Core because it's higher standards and sends a message to the world we're ready to compete."

Jindal demanded in June that the state completely remove itself from Common Core standards. Roemer said the issue was debated and settled by both the Legislature and by BESE. He said Jindal has no authority to overrule BESE and the Legislature on educational policy for students.

Roemer accused the governor of playing politics and putting political standing over the people of Louisiana.

"(It) Sends gridlock to classrooms, mixed messages to teachers, mixed messages to students, the country and the world," Roemer said.

Jindal issued a statement saying BESE needed to follow state law. His administration contends the board did not go through a proper request for proposals during the implementation process for Common Core.

The Louisiana Federation of Teachers is calling for a delay on Common Core, saying the overall rollout was too unorganized.

"This is a mess politically because teachers are waiting to know what they should teach," said Steve Monaghan, president of the LFT.

Lawsuits over Common Core will be heard in court in about two weeks.
