Roads closed, sand bags out across SE Louisiana
DONALDSONVILLE - Strong rains forced road closures across southeast Louisiana Wednesday morning, and caused flooding in some schools and homes.
Ascension Parish reported multiple roads closed throughout the Donaldsonville and Gonzales area. Emergency managers said 29 homes were affected by flooding, as well as AscensionAlternative, Dutch Primary, and Prairieville Middle Schools.
People who need sand bags in Ascension parish can go to the following locations:
- Sorrento Town Hall - limited quantity of sand, bring your own shovel
- Lamar-Dixon Expo Center Barn 7- pre-bagged sand bags
- Frank Sotile Pavilion in Donaldsonville
- Gonzales City Maintenance Barn - pre-bagged sand bags for Gonzales residents
- 5th Ward Fire Department in Darrow
- 7th District Fire Department in Gonzales
- Prairieville Fire Department on Hwy. 73
- Galvez-Lake Fire Department in Prairieville
- Geismar Fire Department on Hwy. 73
Floodwaters in Belle Rose actually caused some coffins to float away from a cemetery there, damaging graves and crypts. Some had to be weighed down with sandbags to remain in place. Officials in the area said they received around six inches of water, which went into some homes.
In St. James Parish, sand bags are available at the Grand Point Fire Station, and a shelter has been set up at Lutcher High School. Transportation services are available for the elderly and those in low-lying areas, and can be scheduled by calling 225-562-2352.
In St. Martin Parish, sand bags are available at the Ruth Bridge Barn in Breaux Bridge and South Barn in St. Martinville.
In Assumption Parish, inmates filled sand bags at the Parish Barn on Highway 1008. Sheriff Mike Waguespack said any businesses or residents who needed them could come by and pick them up.
