"We're 3-1 but I'm not happy." Coach Pete Richardson said in his weekly press luncheon. Coaches are never happy. Are they?
The Jags boast the best offense in the SWAC punching almost 40 points on the scoreboard each game. They've already thrown for over 1000 yards in four games. On special teams, Josh Duran is averaging 42 yards per punt, putting him at second best in the league. Byron Williams picked up SWAC Player of the Week nod for their performance on special teams returning a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown.
If you could pick on something, I guess you would have to go with defense. The Jags are young and have had to fight off injuries. Against Alcorn State, Southern's defense relented to 42 points from a team that had not scored all season. They are near the middle to bottom of the league in conference statistical categories.
If the Jags can clean up some mistakes and grow up quickly on defense, this could be a good season for Southern. If they can pick up a win on Saturday at Jackson State, they have a week off before homecoming where they should easily roll over Fort Valley State.
Then Coach Richardson's club will only have two more tests on the year. First a home game vs. Prairie View, followed by what should be an easy road game at Ark-Pine Bluff then by Alabama State. Southern could very well walk into the Bayou Classic with a 8-1 record for their second test of the year against Grambling to play for a trip to Birmingham. They finish the season with a trip to a struggling Texas Southern.
Although Coach Pete may not be happy, it seems to be falling into place for the Jaguars.
