BATON ROUGE - Authorities say a house fire that happened on River Road early Sunday morning was suspicious in nature, and they’re now investigating what they say is a potential case of arson.

Units from the St. George Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in the 10400 block of River Road, located just south of the Gardere Lane roundabout, at about 3 a.m. Sunday. They arrived on the scene to find flames burning through a significant portion of the roof with the glow of the flames reported visible over the treetops from as far away as Burbank Drive and Bluebonnet Boulevard.

Investigators say the structure was awaiting renovation, so the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters said the fire was under control by 4:02 a.m., but the house and its contents suffered heavy damage with around half of the structure damaged by fire. Crews remained on the scene afterward to hose down hotspots.

The St. George Fire Department says the fire is now the subject of an active investigation.
