"Right Off the Shelf..."
Years ago, my old friend, Frank McLavy would "encourage" me to predict on-coming cold weather so that he could move his fall and winter inventory at McLavy, Ltd. "Seeking Alpha" reports that this year's hint of an early spring has been thwarted on numerous occasions in the north and northeast sections of the country. Previous winter's have ended early, affording Kohl's, Macy's, Target and Wal-Mart an opportunity to attract shoppers and increase the spring shopping season. To add to retailer's pain, early winter was unseasonably warm leading to reduced winter sales at locations such as Dick's Sporting Goods. Some retailers contend that the IRS's delay in sending income tax refund checks squashed February retail sales. Finally, the normally warm southeast experienced unusual blizzards with many stores displaying the wrong seasonal inventory.
