ST. GABRIEL - A controversial rezoning request has been taken off the table because of so much outcry from the public.

Mayor Lionel Johnson tells WBRZ News 2 the property owners decided to cancel their request to rezone about 3,000 acres of land between Nicholson Drive and River Road.  Johnson said he will work with the family to look at potential rezoning options in the future.

Originally, the owners wanted to change the property zoning from residential to heavy industrial. Many residents opposed the move, fearing a plant would be built in the space.  More than 100 people showed up at both a canceled planning and rezoning meeting and city council meeting to hear about the rezoning earlier this month.

"It would help everybody if we were rezoning for a known purpose instead of the fear of what would come there," Johnson said.

Johnson said the issue will be taken up again, but next time it will come with a more defined plan and identify a particular project.

"We'll come up with a project that's beneficial to land owners and the City of St. Gabriel, too," he said.
