'Revenge shooting' connected to New Roads murder
NEW ROADS - Retaliation for a murder two years ago could be the reason for a shooting in Pointe Coupee Parish Wednesday.
The shooting happened around 5:30 a.m. on Carver Drive in New Roads. New Roads police officers arrested 25-year-old Devin Holmes for shooting 55-year-old Joe Lewis three times. New Roads Police Chief Kevin McDonald says the victim will survive the shooting.
Two years ago 36-year-old Damon Brown was killed at a Pointe Coupee Parish lounge after getting into a fight with a man named Joshua Lewis. Lewis was arrested in May 2013 for the murder of Brown. Investigators say Holmes is a cousin of Brown, and Holmes tried to kill Joshua Lewis' father Wednesday morning.
"The guy made a statement to him saying 'I got you. I told you I was going to get you. I got you.' Then he shot him, and he shot him numerous times. He ran back and shot him again," said the victim's daughter. "I guess they still want some type of retaliation or some type of response, but the only response I can tell them is that they need to pray and believe in God and go to church."
A police report obtained by WBRZ News 2 shows that Joe Lewis filed a police report claiming that Holmes and others waved handguns at him and threatened to shoot up his house and kill him. However, Lewis did not sign off on the aggravated assault charge for unknown reasons.
Now after two separate shootings two years apart, one man is dead, two men are in jail and a father is recovering from a near-death experience.
"We are all trying to move past that, and we just want peace. We want everybody to get along. We're a living family. We work hard, and we just want to move on with our life," said Lewis' daughter.
The District Attorney's Office says it planned to offer Joshua Lewis a plea deal for manslaughter in the 2013 murder. Some believe that may have lead Holmes to seek revenge.
