State Supreme Court Chief Justice Catherine D. Kimball has chosen a retired New Orleans criminal
court Judge Dennis Waldron to preside over the trials of five Angola inmates accused of killing a security officer.

Inmates David Mathis, David Brown, Robert G. Carley, Jeffrey Cameron Clark and Barry Edge are accused of first-degree murder in the Dec. 28, 1999, slaying of 49-year-old Capt. David C. Knapps.

State District Judge George H. Ware Jr. presided over pretrial hearings in the cases, but asked the high court to name another judge to conduct the trials, citing the effect that up to five lengthy trials would have on his regular docket.
