CLINTON - The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Department is warning residents to be aware of a scam involving callers claiming to be from the IRS or a debt colllector calling on behalf of the IRS.

According to deputies, the caller tells them they owe money, and a lawsuit will be filed against them if they do not pay immediately. Investigators are trying to determine the source of the calls.

The Internal Revenue Service says to they will never ask for your debit or credit card information over the phone, so you should hang up immediately if someone claiming to be from the IRS asks for it. Call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040 to determine if you owe any money.
