BATON ROUGE, La. - With the start of the 2013 hurricane season, Louisiana officials are urging residents to pre-apply online for disaster food benefits.

The Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called disaster food stamps, provides food assistance for eligible households that do not get regular benefits and need help buying groceries due to lost income or damages after a disaster.

Suzy Sonnier, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services, is urging all residents, especially those living in coastal areas, to take steps to prepare their household by pre-applying for the aid.
