NEW IBERIA- Officials say residents that were forced to evacuate after a chemical plant explosion in Iberia Parish on Tuesday can return to their homes and businesses.
Louisiana State Police say crews have extinguished the fire and have determined it is safe for people to return to the area.
A phased re-entry plan will take place today from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.
People who are returning home will be escorted to their home or business, where the air quality will be monitored. Once the home or business is deemed safe, they will be allowed to enter.
Residents wishing to return to their homes are asked to take Admiral Doyle (from the south side) to LA-3212, then a deputy will direct them to the Sugarena for further instructions.
Louisiana State Police also ask that residents bring photo identification with them when returning.
The cause for the explosion remains under investigation.
