BATON ROUGE - A lighting problem along a busy road is causing safety concerns for residents in Brownsfield.

The lights on the street have been out for more than six months and people are tired of getting excuses. Many who attended Monday's District 2 meeting inside Brownsfield said they feel like they've been left in the dark.

"It's a big safety hazard, cause you gotta a lot of retired people, working people also, and they need that light," resident George Milligan said.

Milligan lives in the Brentwood Subdivision and shared his concerns at the meeting over the broken lights along Plank Road.

"I don't know what all they were supposed to do, but they could at least turn the lights back on. They did a good job on the roads, but the lights...," Milligan said. 

The state fixed a section of the road in Brownsfield eight months ago but the street lights are still out of commission.

Fred Rayford, who works for the city's of Baton Rouge Transportation and drainage department, listened to resident's complaints regarding the lights and said it's now a legal battle between the city, the state and Entergy.

"The problem was that apparently, nobody notified neither DPW or the city of Baton Rouge or Entergy about the problems with the light poles that were currently in the way of the proposed improvement," Rayford said. "If you fix the street you should put back the stuff was there before that."

City officials said they are now looking to install temporary lights along the stretch of Plank Road until the situation is resolved.
