Residents who live in "Gardere" outside the city limits of Baton Rouge told News 2 they are finally feeling safe again.
For several years, the area has been riddled with crime. However, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office hit the area hard in recent years targeting crime.
Crime statistics show two years ago there were seven murders. Last year, there was one.
"Part of that is proactive community centered policing," EBRSO Spokeswoman Casey Hicks said. "We reach out to the community, go door to door and have deputies go out on bikes to form relationships."
Residents who live in the area believe the extra patrols are working.
"I've lived here for two years and have noticed a big change," Zeborah Smith said.
Others have also noticed a change.
"I'm not afraid of someone breaking into my house and stealing all of my stuff," a neighbor said.
