Residents concerned about worsening crime in Donaldsonville
DONALDSONVILLE - People who live in Donaldsonville said they're concerned about a recent uptick in crime.
"We've had shootings. They have shootings everywhere, but not like that. And the reason being for those shootings is unexplainable," said James Lightfoot, who has lived in the town all his life.
Law enforcement has been increased in the town after a double homicide that happened earlier in the year. The most recent shooting happened in the 1300 block of St. Vincent street, where investigators said 21-year-old Michael Stewart was shot and killed on his front porch by 26-year-old Shawn Broom.
Some said the violence is getting worse and the younger generation is at the root of it. But Shedra Green, Broom's cousin, said she's sorry for both sides of the situation.
"I feel for both of them. Like I said, we lost him in the system and we lost him to a better place," Green told News 2.
She said the solution to the problem is simple to her.
"Stop. Just stop. Everybody pray together. Everybody stick together. Stop the violence in Donaldsonville," she said.
