LAPLACE- Glenn Crowley said he's still trying to comprehend the sounds he heard early Thursday, when two deputies were killed by a man with an automatic weapon near where he lives.

"I heard at least 30 rounds go off, it blew me away," he said. "I called my wife and said, 'Honey, I just heard some gun shots,' it sounded like a war zone out here, at least 30 rounds going off."

The deputies were killed and a third wounded in the shooting at a trailer park in LaPlace. They had been investigating the shooting of another deputy earlier that morning at the Valero Engery plant.

The shooting left Crowley bewildered, and left hundreds of Valero plant workers wondering how to go about their day. The deputy shot there had been on an off-duty traffic detail.

"Everyone was just standing around talking about it, trying to find out exactly what went wrong, who was hurt," said Rose Trosclair, who works at a truck stop casino nearby. "It's horrible, it really is, because everyone in this community knows everybody, so to have somebody get hurt or killed it takes a toll on the people."

Plant workers say they expect to return to work tomorrow morning.
