Report: Slain infant slapped, beaten by father
BATON ROUGE - A police report reveals more disturbing details about the events leading up to an infant's death last weekend in Baton Rouge.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, the mother of 11-month-old Aaliyah Heard told investigators that on June 20 the girl's father, 26-year-old Larry Leflore, got mad at the child and slapped her, causing her to fall over and hit her head on the floor.
Investigators also said the girl's brother told foster care workers that Leflore beat his sister because she wouldn't eat her food. He said Leflore hit the girl on both sides of her head and then threw her before putting her to bed.
The investigators said the boy told foster workers "my sister is dead because she got a whipping."
The girl was rushed to the hospital on June 21 after she was found unresponsive. She died the next day, and a coroner's report said the cause of death was blunt force trauma to her head. Police said the girl also had signs of sexual abuse, broken bones, cigarette burns on all her limbs, and a large burn on the side of her leg.
Police arrested the mother, 28-year-old Ashley Heard, earlier in the week on suspicion of cruelty for not reporting her daughter's abuse.
Police charged Leflore on Thursday with first-degree murder and battery. They said during an interview with detectives Leflore denied ever hitting the girl, but admitted to hitting her mother because she wasn't taking care of the girl the way he wanted.
