BATON ROUGE - Five years of data collected on red light cameras in Baton Rouge indicate they're doing what they were designed for reducing red light runners and crashes.

Baton Rouge commissioned a study on camera performance and according to the data, crashes are down and fewer people are running red lights.

Experts say trouble at intersections with cameras dropped by as much as 65 percent at the Winbourne and Victoria intersections.

While some drivers don't like the cameras others say they applaud the results.

"I do think they're helpful. I think they make people be more aware of the traffic and aware they're there and slow down," said Amy McRae.

The contract with the company that operates the cameras expires at the end of the year.

Talks on renewal are underway.
