BATON ROUGE- Forget politics, the conversation at the dinner table of LSU football officials may have been about how to finalize a deal with Houston's Tom Herman.

National media outlets reported Herman was the favorite over Florida State's Jimbo Fisher. ESPN reported Herman moved ahead of Fisher in the coach selection process and USA Today reported Herman met with LSU officials on Thanksgiving.  LSU faced Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.  Houston and College Station are 95 miles apart.

A deal could be in place by the weekend.

Though, LSU released a statement mid-game Thursday night saying there was no coaching decision.

The statement from Joe Alleva was: “Contrary to media reports, there has been no decision made on who will be the next football coach at LSU. Coach Orgeron has done a great job of leading this team since taking over in late September and we are pulling hard for the Tigers tonight against Texas A&M. As we stated earlier, we are going to take our time and make sure we select the right person to lead our football program.”

"I'm going to take it one day at a time and see what happens," Coach Ed Orgeron said in his postgame news conference following LSU's win over Texas A&M Thursday night.  Orgeron did not elaborate much on wanting the head coaching job or the reports of Herman being a candidate.

"I wasn't going to let anything distract (him and the team).  I didn't read one Twitter or whatever you call it," he said.

"I just wish we would have beat Florida," Orgeron said about his time as interim head coach of the Tigers.
