PORT ALLEN - Audrey McCain has her keys, her office, and her computer back a week after Port Allen Mayor "Deedy" Slaughter tried to fire the city's chief financial officer.
McCain told News 2 she was focused today on paying the city's bills. She pays city vendors every Thursday.
McCain said she hasn't had face-to-face contact with Slaughter, who was told by a judge Wednesday not to interfere with McCain's work after they ruled she didn't have the authority to fire McCain. Slaughter is at the mid-winter Louisiana Mayor's Association Conference in Baton Rouge today.
Slaughter fired McCain a week after a News 2 investigation received requested financial records about spending by the mayor's office. They showed Slaughter increased her salary by $20,000 and billed taxpayers more than $2,000 for a trip to the president's inauguration in Washington, D. C.
Slaughter told News 2 Wednesday she could "work with anybody", and that she was in Washington D. C. to meet with lawmakers. None of the lawmakers say they had a meeting with Slaughter.
