Refinery damaged by tornado in St. John Parish
GARYVILLE - The National Weather Service said a tornado damaged a refinery and portions of St. John Parish during Wednesday's severe weather.
Surveyors inspecting the damage said the tornado was likely an EF 1, touching down in the parking lot of the Marathon Petroleum refinery.
The NWS estimated the tornado was 105 yards wide, with speeds around 105 miles per hour.
A spokesperson for the refinery said they are in the process of evaluating the damage, but do not believe the storm caused any offsite impact. State Police sent a HazMat crew to the site to check air quality.
